Would Making A Raised Vegetable Garden Be A Good Idea?

Hi,
I'm hoping someone can help me out. I have really awful, clay soil where I live and I want to plant a vegetable garden. I've heard a bit about raised vegetable gardens, but I'm not sure if this is the right way to go.
Is there anyone out there with a thumb greener than mine that can give me some advice? Thanks.
