What Are The Basic Guidelines For Planting A Vegetable Garden. ?
If you're new to gardening, the single biggest piece of advice I can give you is Start Small. I've seen too many novices put in a large garden, and end up overwhelmed, which leads them to give up gardening altogether, having had a frustrating experience.
Plant maybe 2 or 3 things you want to grow. Pay attention to the sun. Most vegetables (with a few cool-season veggie exceptions) like full sun.
Don't get too caught up in all the gardening "stuff". Veggie plants can grow quite well without all the extra fertilizers and things - especially the first year. If your soil is not heavy clay, it should do fine by itself the first time through.
A common new-gardener mistake is to water daily. Unless you're growing in containers, daily watering will moisten the top 4 to 6 inches of soil, training the roots to stay close to the surface, where the water seems to be, making them more susceptible to drought later. An some plants don't like "wet feet" and will drown over time from daily waterings. A deep soaking once a week is better. (When you first plant the seedings, you can water several times a week for 1 or 2 weeks until they roots establish)
And remember - you will always learn a lot more from your failures, than from your successes.
Add a bit a space, and one or two new kinds of plants each year, as your confidence and experience grows.

I believe in organics.Pick an area that gets plenty of sun.Watch the area for a day. 6 to 8 hours is optimal.Till the ground.(This means turning the soil.)Remove briers, rocks and large clumps of grass and weeds.Incorporate top soil, peat and a small amount of wood ash (if available) from natural wood throughout the garden bed.what I have incredible success with is using a complete soil mix and digging a hole 12 inches deep,6 inches wide, filling it with complete mix and put plants started at the nursery in the holes.Water well in the morning, and avoid watering after 4:00 pm until plants have established. Two weeks should do. After that once or twice a week Except if it is terribly hot.Your plants will let you know when the leaves start drooping.. The trick to successful vegetable gardens is good soil with amendments, plenty of sun, and deep waterings. To keep it low on weeds and retain moisture, put straw around the plantings.(not hay)Insects will always be a nuisance, so when the problem arises, write back for solutions.Follow directions on the tag for any special needs your plants may need.Happy gardening!

I don't know about foxes but for sure I know about cats. Sprinkle little peices of orange peels or put something down that smells like oranges. I used to have this problem with my house plants. Worked like a charm.
