What does the water need? and is hydroponics basically just suspending the plant in a little cup in the water?

Generally your going to use the same type of nutrients for soil, in hydroponics. When you look for your fertilizers (nutrients) you see three numbers on the bag/bottle. This is the N-P-K for that particular fertilizer. (N) Nitrogen, (P) Phosphorus, and (K) Potassium. The numbers represent the percentage for each (N-P-K) that is in the container.
Hydroponics is basically growing without soil. The method you describe in your question is known as Deep Water Culture (DWC). This is the method of having the plant sit in the nutrient filled water at all times. There are many different hydroponic methods, however DWC is probably one of the easiest to start out with.
