I wanted to do this for my science fair project, but then I realized how expensive it was. I had to change my topic last minute, and I am real interested on what I started. It seems like fun. Any ideas?

A plastic tray can be obtained from a nursery for free since they throw out the flats that they receive with their shipments. For a science fair budget, you can leave out the recirculating pump and just pour the collection bucket back into the supply bucket after adding nutrients on a daily basis. Short bits of pumps can be collected from housing construction sites. Just be sure to ask the site manager and foreman before taking. That way it's not stealing.
A little ingenuity and I'm sure you can have fresh veggies for under $ 20 capital cost.
